Grain harvest exceeds last year by 14.1 million tons

This year, Russia may export 49 million tons of grain, including up to 39 million tons of wheat.

Farmers of Siberia and the Urals were forced to slow down the pace of harvesting due to rains.

By August 26, agrarians harvested 94.1 million tons of grain from 60.4% of the area, which is more than last year by 14.1 million tons and 4.4%, respectively. Including wheat, 69.3 million tons (58.9 million tons) were threshed with a yield of 35.4 c / ha (33.8 c / ha). It is harvested from 66.5% (58.9%) of crops. Barley was threshed from 68.8% (63.7% last year) of the area, 17.2 million tons (15.1 million tons) were harvested with a yield of 29.3 c / ha (26.9 c / ha), the Ministry of Agriculture reports.… According to the department’s forecasts, the grain harvest in Russia will be at least 122 million tons.

The progress in the harvesting campaign compared to last year is quite significant both in terms of acreage and in terms of yield. There are even abnormal phenomena: traditionally, in the Volga region, the yield at a stratum is at high values, and then sharply decreases. “This year we do not see this: it is even growing in a number of regions. This suggests that spring wheat gives quite good results, “he told Agroinvestor“Head of the grain department of the Institute for Agricultural Market Studies ( IKAR) Oleg Sukhanov.

He adds that the agrarians of Siberia and the Urals were forced to slow down the harvesting rate a little due to the continuous rains for ten days, which may somewhat worsen the quality of the grain. However, if weather returns to normal in September, it is likely that yields in these regions will be higher than last year.

But the first results of harvesting corn in the South show a rather pessimistic picture, but this cannot be called a surprise: there are real problems with corn in the South, Sukhanov continues. Thus, in the Krasnodar Territory the average yield is about 3.5 t / ha, while last year it was at the level of 5.5 t / ha. This sharp decline is due to the heat and drought that were in the region in July and August.

“Yes, the worst corn fields are being harvested now, the best will probably come later, but in any case, we are not expecting any production records in the South. However, the harvest in the Center is still looking good, but there are hardly any records here either. In the country as a whole, due to the expansion of crops, good yields in the Center, the Volga region, we will probably get a result comparable to last year – 14.3-14.5 million tons, ”says Sukhanov. According to him, about 4 million tons of them will be exported (in the 2019/20 season – 4.3 million tons). Harvesting all grain this year IKARpredicts at 130 million tons, including 82.5 million tons of wheat. Export will go to 49 million tons and 38 million tons, respectively.

” Rusagrotrans»Estimates the potential for gross grain harvest in Russia at 128.8 million tons, including 81.9 million tons of wheat, 20.7 million tons of barley, 14 million tons of corn. However, the yield of the latter in the South is lower than expected, so its harvest may decrease to 13.5-13.8 million tons, says the head of the analytical center Rusagrotrans»Igor Pavensky.

He also adds that the harvest campaign for wheat and barley is almost over or coming to an end in most of the grain-producing regions of the Center and is fully completed in the South of the country. According to Pavensky, there were slight delays due to rains in the Volga region, where spring wheat is already being harvested, but the yield is still record high – at the level of 2017. In Siberia, wheat yields have declined by 9% year-on-year in comparable areas, and the gap will widen as the harvesting of spring wheat, which has suffered from drought in Altai Krai, Omsk and Novosibirsk regions, progresses.

“With such fees, export (taking into account the EAEU countries) will consume about 49 million tons of cereals and legumes, including approximately 38.5-39 million tons of wheat. Last year, according to our estimates, there were 45.2 million tons and 35.1 million tons, respectively, – told Agroinvestor»Pavensky. “Exports of corn will most likely be lower than in the 2019/20 season, when it amounted to 4 million tons, barley – 5.5 million tons (4.5 million tons last year).” Thus, this season could become the second most exported after the 2017 record.
