The participants of the seminar held at the Beryozka farm in Chesmensky Raion, Chelyabinsk Oblast, evaluated the new Russian durum wheat variety. Creating a sustainable production of durum wheat grain of a given quality to meet the needs of modern pasta industry – this was the theme of the meeting, which was attended by interested managers and specialists of South Urals enterprises, representatives of the regional Ministry of Agriculture and the Rosselkhoz Center.

The main speakers at the event were representatives of the Group of Companies “Agroleague of Russia”, which includes LLC “Agroleague Plant Breeding Center” is a patent holder for the variety of durum wheat “Bourbon”. This variety was discussed at the seminar by South Urals agrarians. State trials of the variety was held in 2019, and this year it was included in the State Register of breeding achievements. Currently, it is being tested in the fields of the farm “Beryozka”, the creator and director of which is an honorary professor of SUSU Konstantin Ivanovich Shumskikh. He told in detail about production experience and scientific and practical activity of his enterprise.

Opening the seminar, First Deputy Minister of Agriculture of the Chelyabinsk region Alexander Zavalishchin noted the innovative activity of the enterprise “Beryozka”, a huge contribution of the farm to the regional seed production. The First Deputy Minister also spoke about steps to minimize the consequences of the severe drought that hit the Southern Urals in the first half of this summer.

Innovative variety of durum wheat “Bourbon” – Russian selection, as opposed to the Italian variety “Rusticano” used today. “Bourbon” also differs from other Russian varieties of durum by the fact that it has the most important quality at the genetic level – high quality of gluten – due to which such grain produces excellent flour for making pasta of European level. This variety has a high gluten index and high protein content, is drought resistant and adapted to the Russian climate.

Bourbon” variety is tested by specialists of the Chelyabinsk branch of the Rosselkhoz Center. After examining the fields and analyzing the results of wheat cultivation in an ordinary South Urals field, a conclusion on the crop varieties is made. For this purpose, the Rosselkhoz Center agronomists have inspected 58 hectares of elite seed plots.

“We walk along the diagonal of the field and select at least 3 thousand ears, which we then tie into sheaves of 100 pieces. If straw is a type of stem – strong, then more than 8-10 stems in the hand not to gain,” – said the chief agronomist of the branch Alina Targonskaya.

Specialists determine varietal purity, infestation, absence of diseases or pests. According to the acting head of the Chelyabinsk branch of the Rosselkhoz Center Ksenia Vanina, the main task of the agrarians after the harvest is to bring the seeds to the sowing conditions to obtain a certificate of conformity, the press service of the Rosselkhoz Center.

In the Chelyabinsk region, sowing of durum wheat in 2020 occupies more than 150 thousand hectares. The region is one of the main suppliers of durum for Russian pasta industry.
