Volga Baikal AGRO News Update on Russian Railways Electrification of the last Section of the Railway to the border with China !!!

Russian Railways completed the electrification of the last section of the railway to the border with China.On March 22, Minister of Transport of the Russian Federation Vitaly Savelyev, General Director – Chairman of the Board of Russian Railways Oleg Belozerov and Governor of the Trans-Baikal Territory Alexander Osipov opened the movement of trains on the electrified section Borzya – Zabaikalsk (Transbaikal Territory, border with China) in the format of a teleconference.

“I congratulate all railway workers and residents of the Trans-Baikal Territory on the successful implementation of this important project. It became the final stage in the electrification of a 365-kilometer section from Karymskaya station to Zabaikalsk station, the largest railway checkpoint on the Russian-Chinese border,” – said Transport Minister Vitaly Savelyev. He stressed that the development of the Eastern test site is a priority project in the infrastructure development of the state, which is given close attention by the President and the Government of the Russian Federation.

“The electrification of the section will increase its throughput, which will ensure the growth of traffic between Russia and China. In addition, the transition to electric traction will not only significantly reduce the operating costs of the road, but through the use of electric locomotives will significantly reduce the impact of railway transport on the environment,” – said Oleg Belozerov, CEO and Chairman of the Management Board of Russian Railways.

“Thanks to the expansion of capacity, we are pinning great hopes on an increase in cargo traffic, on the shipment of goods, primarily from the Trans-Baikal Territory and from the territory of the entire country. We hope that this will give a significant impetus to the growth of the regional economy,” – said the Governor of the Trans-Baikal Territory, Alexander Osipov.

The electrification of the Borzya – Zabaikalsk railway section is part of the project for the reconstruction of the Karymskaya – Zabaikalsk railway line, which connects the Trans-Siberian Railway and the Zabaikalsk – Manchuria border crossing on the border with China.

To electrify the last section with a length of 117 km, the railway workers erected a contact network (over 340 km of unfolded length), 2 traction substations and 4 autotransformer substations, updated communication lines and traffic control devices on the site. More than 500 people, more than 100 units of construction equipment, including 80 units on railroad tracks, were involved at the facilities at peak times. 

Russian Railways’ investments in the electrification of the Borzya – Zabaikalsk section amounted to more than 9.3 billion rubles. With the opening of the through movement of trains on electric traction along it, the throughput capacity of the southern direction of ZabZhD will be increased to 110 pairs of trains per day.
