Volga Baikal AGRO News Update on Russian Agriculture Grain Quality of the 2020 Harvest – Grade 3 Wheat Yield Reaches Record Level !!!

Experts assessed the quality of the grain of the new harvest.

The Center for Grain Quality Assessment (CAOK) examined 38.2 million tons of grain, including 30.9 million tons of wheat. According to the monitoring, the share of 1st grade wheat was 0.002% (0.003% in 2019), 2nd – 0.2% (0.02%). The share of the 3rd class over the past week increased from 30.4% to 32.3%, which corresponds to the level of the previous year (32.9%), the share of the 4th class reached 38.4% (in 2019 it was 46%). Compared to last week, there was less wheat of the 5th grade – 29%, which, however, is significantly higher than last year’s indicators (20.7%).

In general, the share of food wheat rose to 70.9%, while last year the figure was 78.9%. In particular, in the South, grades 1-4 account for 90.4% of the surveyed wheat, in the Volga region – 47%, which is lower than last year’s level, the center notes. In central Russia, the share of wheat of grades 1-4 was 63.3%, in Siberia – 86.6%.

According to the vice-president of the Russian Grain Union Alexander Korbut, the grain quality this year meets expectations. “There is a fairly high proportion of grade 3 wheat with good baking properties, grade 4 is as good as fodder,” he says. According to Korbut, technologies, high-quality seeds and fertilizers used by agricultural producers played a role in this.

Head of the analytical center  Rusagrotrans Igor Pavensky adds that if we make a calculation based on the data of the Central Regional Development Commission for the shares of soft wheat classes and the forecast of the gross wheat yield, which includes, in addition to grades 3-5, also grades 1-2, as well as durum, then this year a record level of wheat 3rd class. “The percentage, according to the TsOKZ, is lower than last year, but due to the increase in gross harvest from 74.5 million tons to 83.8 million tons, the volume of the 3rd class will be about 26.6 million tons, and this is another record after 2019, when, according to our calculations, this figure reached 24.3 million tons, and in 2017, with a similar gross yield (86 million tons), it was lower and amounted to about 20.7 million tons, – Pavensky told to Agroinvestor.

According to Pavensky, this year the volume of feed wheat production also increased by 1.5 million tons – to 24.6 million tons, but this is still lower than 2017, when about 27 million tons of feed wheat were harvested. -th class – by about 2 million tons by 2019, the expert continues, but this is partially offset by a significant increase in the share of 3rd class. “To get the quality you want, the batches are blended and the required protein level and other parameters are obtained,” adds Pavensky. “In general, everything turned out quite favorably for the domestic market and for exporters, perhaps with some regional differences,” Pavensky believes. – And the second after the record gross harvest of wheat in general, and a sufficient amount of wheat of different classes, with different quality for export to different countries,

General Director of the Institute for Agricultural Market Studies (IKAR) Dmitry Rylko believes that in the European part of Russia this year the range of wheat quality is much wider than in the past. If last year the country had an exceptionally high proportion of ordinary wheat of the 3rd class and there was relatively little forage, this year there is a lot of both forage and wheat of the 4th class. And due to the large volume, the 3rd class is also enough. All this is reflected in Russian exports: last year, standard wheat dominated with 12.5% protein, with “intersperses” of 13.5% and more, and this year the export range is much wider: from 10.5% to 15, 3% protein.

According to the forecast of the general director of the analytical agency ProZerno Vladimir Petrichenko, Russia will harvest over 130 million tons of grain in the 2020 season, Interfax reports. “More than 130 million tons – for sure. We will harvest more than 83 million tons of wheat. A very good harvest of barley – more than 21 million tons, this is also obvious, ”Petrichenko said. Corn harvest, he said, is expected to exceed 13 million tons. Other industry analysts also forecast a harvest of more than 130 million tons in net weight. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, as of October 13, 128.8 million tons in bunker weight were harvested, a little less than 7% of the crop remains to be harvested.
