A technology for processing wastewater into fertilizers has been developed!

Researchers from Aalto University (Finland) have developed a technology for processing wastewater into chemicals needed for agriculture. The technology, called NPHarvest, is based on chemical coagulation using lime. Due to this technology, phosphorus, ammonium sulphate and calcium are recovered in wastewater after processing. During processing, organic polymers are obtained. The same output starch can be used as traditional coagulants for phosphorus reduction. The separation of nitrogen in ammonia form is based on the use of special gas-permeable membranes. The new technology will make possible to obtain the output of various chemicals needed for the agricultural industry. So, nitrogen, for example, can be used in fields in the form of ammonium phosphate, while ammonium nitrate will find industrial applications. Recent experiments have shown that phosphoric acid can be used to bind nitrogen during water treatment. According to scientists, the flexibility of the new technology will accelerate the transition to zero-waste production, in which human waste can be used to produce chemicals that are strategically important for agriculture and industry.
