Compared to last year, we will have an increase of over 4%. Despite unfavorable weather conditions, despite the pandemic, the agro-industrial complex is showing growth, ”the head of the Ministry of Agriculture said at the opening of the agricultural exhibition“ Golden Autumn”.
For eight months of 2020, agricultural production has almost doubled compared to the same period in 2019, Prime Minister Mikhail Mushustin said at the exhibition. Russia has managed to prevent food shortages in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic and ensured its own food security. “The rush demand for food, which happened during the acute phase of the coronavirus, has successfully passed, and in fact the problem of food security has been resolved,” the head of the Cabinet of Ministers, who spoke to the exhibitors, was quoted by TASS.
According to the director general of the Institute for Agricultural Market Studies (IKAR) Dmitry Rylko, perhaps the percentage estimate of growth provided by the Ministry of Agriculture is slightly overestimated and in reality fluctuates between 3% and 4%. “I am even more inclined to the indicator of 3%, because we have about 8% higher production of cereals, growth in pig and dairy farming, but there will be a serious decline in sugar beet, drawdown in sunflower,” he commented to Agroinvestor.
Even under the conditions of quarantine restrictions, the spring sowing took place as usual, “there were enough workers,” Patrushev stressed. As a result, in 2020 Russia will harvest the second largest grain harvest in its history – at least 125 million tons, the Ministry of Agriculture predicts. The head of government said that on Thursday at a meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers preliminary results of the harvest campaign will be summed up, but “it is already clear that the harvest will be larger than last year.”
According to the forecast of the Ministry of Economic Development, this year agricultural production may increase by 1% against 4% in 2019, follows from the updated forecast of the socio-economic development of Russia prepared by the department. According to Rosstat data, in August the increase in agricultural production in farms of all categories amounted to 4.4% – this is the highest indicator since the beginning of the year. In particular, the production of livestock and poultry for slaughter in live weight increased over the last summer month (to the same period in 2019) by 5.2%, milk – by 1.3%, eggs – by 0.4%. In the meantime, there is no need to know about it.”
