Winter has come in its own right throughout the vast territory of Russia. What is it bringing? Low temperatures, snow, snow cover are its main manifestations.

But the range of winter weather is much wider, and this winter (like all previous and subsequent ones) can not be without heavy snowfalls, blizzards, snow drifts, severe frost, thaws, wet snow sticking, ice-frost phenomena and fogs. The territory of Russia is large and diverse in terms of physical and geographical conditions, so the frequency of these adverse weather conditions varies greatly in different regions. In Yakutia and Siberia, there are traditionally severe frosts, on the coast of the eastern and Arctic seas – strong winds and snowstorms. In the European part of the country, frosts that came from the Urals can be replaced by heavy snowfalls and thaws brought by western or southern cyclones.

The temperature in the central regions and in the Volga region, as well as in places in the northern regions at the beginning of the 3-rd week will remain below the climatic norm by 8-12°C. On January 21, under the influence of the warm atmospheric front of the Atlantic cyclone, snow will pass in the area, the wind will increase in some places up to 12-17 meters per second with a blizzard. Ice is expected in some areas in the afternoon. The prevailing air temperature at night is minus 20°C – minus -13°C, in the south-east up to minus 25°C; in the afternoon minus 12°C – minus 5°C, in the west up to 0°C.

In addition to the central regions, it is abnormally cold in the coming days of January 19 – 20 in the north of the Volga Federal Area: the temperature is below the climatic norm by 7°C or even more. At night of January 19 in the north of the Volga region minus 30°C – minus 33°C, in the Middle Volga region minus 25°C – minus 30°C.

Such phenomena as heavy snow, blizzard, wet snow, ice, and heavy fog can be predicted within about 3 days (with subsequent refinement and detailing of forecasts and warnings with less advance time). Longer-lasting and covering vast areas of the cold wave can be predicted with greater advance.
