Volga Baikal AGRO NEWS Update on Wheat Situation in Russia !!!

In 2020 a share of feed wheat increased.

According to the final data of the Russian Agricultural Center, a share of milling wheat in the surveyed volume of the harvest this year is less than last year, and a share of fodder wheat is greater. Profile analysts interviewed by Agroinvestor note that, given the good yield, an increase in the share of forage will not play a negative role for consumers.

The Russian Agricultural Center studied 14.2 million tons of wheat. Last year it surveyed 14.9 million tons. This year a share of 3rd class wheat decreased from 37.4% to 29.5%, 4th class – from 44.6% to 39.8%. At the same time, a share of wheat of the 1st and 2nd classes increased to 1.5% against 0.17%. A share of feed wheat increased from 17.7% (last year) to 29.1%. According to the Russian Agricultural Center, a share of food wheat in the Central Federal Area decreased from 75.1% to 73.3%, in the South – from 82.9% to 80%, in the Volga region – from 60.8% to 56.1%, in Uralsk – from 95.4% to 92.8%, in Siberia – from 76.4% to 72.4%. The largest decrease in a share of food wheat occurred in the North Caucasus Federal Area, which this year was severely affected by drought, from 91.9% to 78.8%.

According to Vice-president of the Russian Grain Union (RGU) Alexander Korbut, these indicators are not critical, and the quality of the grain is generally good. “We have such a high grain harvest that all these issues are being leveled,” – he told to Agroinvestor. Korbut notes that this year the volumes of wheat of the 3rd and 4th classes are more than enough for the processors. “You just have to remember that flour is made not only from 3rd grade wheat, but from a grinding batch, where the share of this wheat, even with the highest standards, is about 75%. There is no question of resources here,” – Korbut emphasizes.

General Director of the Institute for Agricultural Market Studies (IKAR) Dmitry Rylko says that the grain quality is not bad this year. “The quality is worse than last year, if we take the percentage, but due to the high yield, it is not bad: with large production of 3rd class wheat and fodder, which our country also needs,” – Rylko commented to Agroinvestor. He also notes that the increase in a share of feed wheat is not critical due to the large gross harvest. Arkady Zlochevsky, President of the RGU, has a similar opinion According to him, a share of forage always increases with increasing yields. “The lower the yield, the higher the quality, and vice versa,” – he explained to Agroinvestor.

Dmitry Patrushev, Minister of Agriculture, reported at a government meeting with President Vladimir Putin that this year the grain harvest in net weight would exceed 131 million tons compared to 121.2 million tons last year. According to IKAR’s forecast, the final figure can reach 132 million tons. This year the wheat harvest can reach 85 million tons, which will be the second result after the 2017 record, when 85.9 million tons were harvested.
