WHEAT EXPORTS FROM RUSSIA BY AUGUST 4 ARE 20% LOWER THAN LAST YEAR

Wheat exports from Russia from July 1 to August 4 amounted to 3.37 million tons, which is 20% less than in the same period last year, according to the Center for Grain Quality Assessment on the basis of issued phytosanitary certificates.

In general, the export of grain and its processed products during this period amounted to 4.9 million tons, which is 12% less than last year, including grain exports – 4.2 million tons (15% less). At the same time, barley supplies increased by 23% to 693 thousand tons.

Russian grain was supplied to 82 countries of the world.

According to the Center, demand for Russian wheat in July increased from the countries of South Asia and Central Africa. In particular, in July, South Africa entered the top 5 grain buyers for the first time, importing 153 thousand tons of grain, mainly wheat.

In general, Turkey remains the leader in purchases, where 683 thousand tons of grain were delivered, including 562 thousand tons of wheat. In second place is Saudi Arabia with 499 thousand tons, including 441 thousand tons of barley, in third place is Egypt with 443 thousand tons of wheat.

The center also said that in July, the DPRK purchased 25 thousand tons of wheat from the Russian Federation, which corresponds to the volume of purchases for the entire last agricultural year. Grain shipments to Romania also sharply increased.

Dmitry Rylko, Director General of the Institute for Agrarian Market Studies (IKAR), told Interfax that the lag in exports from last year is explained by the late start of harvesting this year compared to the two previous years. “The delay was five days. In addition, the yield in the southern regions this year is lower than last year,” he said.
In addition, the psychology of the peasants, who are not in a hurry to sell the grain of the new harvest, “got involved”. “Prices immediately started to rise, there are no signs of a fall, so grain owners are in no hurry, expecting even better conditions and the fact that exporters will come.”

But, as noted by Rylko, “it is not over yet, harvesting is picking up speed, and by the end of August, exports will accelerate.” “If we analyze the last five seasons, then exports this year, although lower than in the previous two seasons, are higher than even in the record 2017/2018 agricultural year,” he said. “So the pace of export start this season is average for the last five years, “he said.

At the end of the 2017/2018 agricultural year, Russia became the world leader in wheat export, sending it abroad almost 41 million tons.
