On October 22, 2020, the Federal Center “Agroexport” together with the Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation held a business mission of Russian companies exporting agricultural products to the Republic of Algeria, – the DairyNews told to the press service of Agroexport.

The event took place on the virtual platform of Agroexport, and was attended by more than 70 organizations from the Russian and Algerian sides – agrarian departments, regulatory and supervisory bodies, industry unions and associations, leading exporters and importers of food products.

The plenary session, which brought together more than 120 participants, was opened by the Deputy Minister of Agriculture of Russia Sergey Levin, who noted that Russia considers Algeria an important partner and sees serious potential in increasing mutual trade. In particular, Algeria recently relaxed its requirements for the content of grains damaged by a bug, which allows Russian exporters to start participating in tenders for the supply of wheat to Algeria.

Agriculture is a priority area of the economy in Algeria, and the potential for its development is far from being exhausted, said Ahmed Bugalem, Acting Secretary General of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Algeria. Therefore, the country is aimed at international cooperation in terms of the development of investments in domestic production.

Algeria is a state with a young and fast-growing population, so there will be a place for Russian-made goods on its market, said Ivan Nalich, the Russian trade representative in Algeria. According to the Federal Customs Service, in 2019, Russian food supplies to Algeria amounted to just over $ 136 million, almost 90% of this volume accounted for soybean and sunflower oil. At the same time, Algeria annually imports 6-7 million tons of wheat, is a large importer of milk powder, annually purchases about 50 thousand tons of chilled and frozen cattle meat.

In 2001, Russia and Algeria signed a strategic partnership agreement, which for Russia became the first such agreement with Arab countries since the Soviet era, Tayeb Shebab, President of the National Chamber of Commerce of Algeria, recalled.

Now the main position in the structure of Russian exports to Algeria is soybean oil, this year its export has already amounted to more than 65 million US dollars, said Roman Chekushov, director of the Department for the Development of Agricultural Products Export of the Russian Ministry of Agriculture. However, the Ministry of Agriculture of Russia is confident in good prospects for other Russian agricultural products on the Algerian market: sunflower oil, yeast, dried legumes. Since 2019, the supply of seeds, fruits, buckwheat and other cereals, started.

Further work on the development of business contacts between Russian and Algerian companies will be supported by Agroexport and the Trade Office in Algeria, as well as industry unions and associations.
