World Food Day is annually held on October 16 to commemorate the founding of the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).
Here are some facts to consider:
This year, the theme is Climate is Changing. the event will focus on climate actions for a sustainable future. In 2015, it was Social protection and agriculture: breaking the cycle of rural poverty.
Water supply is considered to be the principle constraint on efforts to expand world food production. Aquifer depletion now threatens grain harvests in three big grain producers: China, India and the US.
Hunger poses a significant economic burden, both on individuals and on national economies. The cost of hunger to developing nations is estimated at $450 billion per year.

World Food Day is an international day celebrated every year around the world on 16 October in honor of the date of the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in 1945. The day is celebrated widely by many other organizations concerned with food security, including the World Food Programme and the International Fund for Agricultural Development. World Food Programme got the Nobel Prize in Peace for the year 2020 for their efforts to combat hunger, contribution to make peace in conflicted areas and for playing role of driving force to stop the use of hunger in the form of a weapon for war and conflict.
The World Food Programme (WFP) is the food-assistance branch of the United Nations. It is the world’s largest humanitarian organization, the largest one focused on hunger and food security, and the largest provider of school meals. Founded in 1961, it is headquartered in and has offices in 80 countries. As of 2019, it served 97 million people in 88 countries, the largest since 2012, with two-thirds of its activities conducted in conflict zones.
