The regions of the Volga region, which have grown a record harvest this year, are beginning to experience a shortage of capacities for receiving and processing it, Dmitry Rylko, Director General of the Institute for Agrarian Market Studies (IKAR), told Interfax.
“In some regions, in particular in the Ulyanovsk and Penza regions, problems with storage of wheat are beginning to arise. The same problem may affect the Nizhny Novgorod and some other regions,” he said, adding that “this is, one might say, a pleasant problem of a mega-harvest “.
According to him, tension is growing during the harvest. In addition, it rained in a number of regions, and wheat began to sprout on the vine. “And there is still barley harvesting ahead, it must be carried out at a high rate, because it quickly crumbles,” Rylko said.
The head of the IKAR noted that the peculiarity of the current harvest was that the yield of wheat increased with the course of harvesting, although traditionally, with the advancement of the harvest to other regions, it falls. “Everything usually started from the food south, and then gradually the yield declined. In the current year, it grew until half of the area was harvested, and only after that it began to slowly decline. This has never happened in the history of modern Russia.” he said.
High yields in the Volga region and the center became the reason for another increase in the forecast for wheat harvest in the Russian Federation. According to Rylko, the new IKAR forecast is 1 million tons higher than the previous one and amounts to 82 million tons.
According to him, in the central regions, grain was harvested from 75% of the area, the yield was at the record level of 50 centners / ha. In the Volga region, from half of the harvested areas, 32 c / ha were obtained. “This is even higher than the record-breaking 2017 figure when half of the harvested area is also taken into account,” he said.
Last year, during this period, the yield in the region was 18 c / ha, Rylko recalled.
